To help improve the livelihoods of cocoa-farming households, we recently initiated the 50 for 50 Project under Nestlé’s Income Accelerator Program (IAP).
This initiative helps women farmers and spouses to start small poultry businesses within their communities. Working with Premier Poultry Limited, we have given 50 chickens to 50 IAP households. This is a simple yet effective way of helping farmer households diversify their incomes and improve their nutrition.
The participants received training on poultry management covering things such as sanitation, feed management, and disease control, and were provided with drinkers and feed to support their birds until they lay enough eggs to sell. And to boost their business skills, they also received financial management training focused on recordkeeping, market access, and sales.
As their businesses take off, many of the women have already built coops, and some have even bought additional birds to boost their stock and increase their incomes.
